What happened, which websites participated, and where do you stand on the issue?
Recently the White House proposed a privacy bill of rights for Internet users that could give them more say over how personal information is collected and used. It is called the “consumer Privacy Bill of Rights”. It offers a sensible set of principles for online privacy, calling on Web companies to minimize their collection if personal data, help users make informed choices about the information they reveal, and not to use personal data for new purposes without the user’s consent. There are many websites that already have a good security for personal information. Website owners also have been upgrading the personal information so that users can set up their own private information. This “Bill of Rights” isn’t really needed for website owners have been doing it since the users complaints. For example, Facebook, it use to have bad privacy information protection, but many users have been complaining about the privacy issue, so the owner takes action to make his “customers” happy. There are commissions like the Federal Trade Commission and California prosecutors have the power to crack down on companies that make misleading statements about their privacy policies. Website owners know this and will not make a false move to lose his/her company or users. Also, the government shouldn’t be part of user’s privacy because it should be the user’s responsibility to accept or decline to show their private information to the world. This shouldn’t be a country problem; this can be local or even a states problem. I don’t just go around and give my private information to everyone, even on social network sites. I’m always aware of what not to put online for it can be dangerous. That’s why my mom always tells me, after shopping online; always delete the credit card number for hackers can get it. I say that the government shouldn’t make choices for others, people should know about the weak privacy protection many websites have.
